Case Study Overview

Read how mass public transportation agency, Pierce Transit, leveraged Infocyte's managed detection and response platform to execute a fast and non-invasive cybersecurity risk assessment (compromise assessment) to expose unknown threats, vulnerabilities, and risks within their environment.

The Challenge

Pierce Transit is a nationally recognized leader in the public transportation industry. The company is dependent on information technology—not just for its core business activities (HR, payroll, etc.), but also for servicing its complex transit systems.

Like other public service organizations, Pierce Transit has seen a rise in cyber threats. Malware is the primary attack vector for transit agencies, often using phishing emails on unsuspecting employees. Even with best practices, the malware can lay dormant in a network for months and have huge repercussions when it is finally launched. For a transit system, a serious cyber attack can take system operations down for days or even weeks and affect thousands of riders.

Pierce Transit has a relatively small internal IT team that manages all of its systems, so they knew they needed a professional third-party vendor to help address their malware issues. They also knew that malware can lay dormant in a network for months, so they wanted to know if they had already been breached.

Our Solution

Pierce Transit was already aware of Infocyte’s reputation as a leader in proactive malware solutions. They also knew from their colleagues in the industry that Infocyte was able to find malware undetected by other software strategies.

Accordingly, the company asked Infocyte to conduct a compromise assessment with Infocyte HUNT to verify whether a network has been breached and to quickly identify the presence of known or zero day malware and persistent threats — active or dormant — that have evaded existing cybersecurity defenses.

The Results

Infocyte’s agentless platform was able to evaluate the entire Pierce Transit network without the burden of complicated equipment or endpoint software installations. Infocyte HUNT was used to scan more than 600 endpoints, looking for malware and suspicious code and documenting findings in a scan summary report. Following further analysis on the scan data, Infocyte delivered an executive-level report to the transit company within a few days.

"The compromise assessment explained our current security posture in an easy to understand report for the IT team and our executives.”

- Keith Messner, CTO, Pierce Transit

Infocyte was able to confirm that Pierce Transit’s network environment was malware-fee with good security hygiene. Furthermore, the executive report provided valuable recommendations to help ensure that the company keeps its network malware-free. Pierce Transit continues to use Infocyte to scan its systems to maintain its clean bill of health and general peace of mind.
